The New York Consulate has introduced a new streamlined process for individuals applying for Italian citizenship by descent (iure sanguinis). This pathway is specifically designed for applicants whose parents were born in Italy, offering a more efficient and structured way to obtain Italian citizenship.

New Online Appointment System

In a bid to simplify the application process, the New York Consulate has implemented a virtual appointment system through the Prenot@MI portal. Applicants can now book appointments online, ensuring a more organized and accessible application experience.

Steps to Book an Appointment

1. Create an Account on Prenot@MI Portal
   • Visit the Prenot@MI portal and register for an account.
   • Select "Citizenship by direct descent (parent born in Italy)" to proceed.
2. Schedule Your Appointment
   • Book a virtual appointment online to start your application process.

Required Documents for Mail Submission

Applications must be submitted exclusively by mail and include the following documents:

1. Italian Parent’s Birth Certificate
   • Estratto dell’atto di nascita issued by the Italian comune where the birth was registered.
2. Parents’ Marriage Certificate
   • If the marriage occurred in Italy, submit the estratto dell’atto di matrimonio.
   • If the marriage occurred abroad, submit the original certificate (in long form), duly legalized and translated into Italian.
3. Italian Parent’s Green Card or US Naturalization Certificate
   • Include a copy of the parent’s green card or US naturalization certificate. Ensure the correct name and date of birth are printed on the naturalization certificate.
4. Your Birth Certificate
   • Submit the original birth certificate in long form where your parents’ names appear exactly as they do on their original birth certificates. The document must be duly legalized and translated into Italian.
5. Marriage Certificate (if applicable)
   • Submit the original long-form marriage certificate, duly legalized and translated into Italian, with your parents’ names as they appear on their birth certificates.
   • Include a photocopy of your spouse’s birth certificate if necessary.
6. Children’s Birth Certificates (if applicable)
   • Submit the original birth certificate for each minor child, in long form, duly legalized by apostille, and translated into Italian.

   • Money order or cashier check made out to the “Consulate General of Italy in New York.” Include your full (maiden if applicable) name on the memo portion.
