Irish Citizenship by Birth

If you were born on the island of Ireland (including Northern Ireland) before January 1, 2005, you are automatically an Irish citizen. However, for those born after this date, the requirements are a bit more complex:

• At least one parent must be an Irish citizen or entitled to be an Irish citizen at the time of your birth.
• If your parents were not Irish citizens, at least one of them must have been legally resident in Ireland for three out of the four years immediately preceding your birth.

Irish Citizenship by Descent

Irish Citizenship by Naturalization

• Having a total of 5 years of reckonable residence out of the last 9 years, including 1 year of continuous residence immediately before applying.

Irish Citizenship through Marriage or Civil Partnership
